Understanding Fire and Smoke
Sadly,
fire loss is more common than we want to know and it
can be quite a challenge because of the
characteristics of smoke. It is important to get
trained professional technicians to the site that
understands fire and smoke and what is needed to
restore the damage.
Generally speaking, there
is "hot smoke" which travels to cool areas and to the
upper levels of a structure. Obviously, the smoke will
flow through the plumbing systems, using the holes
around pipes to go from floor to floor. This is the
kind of smoke that can have the most damaging affect
on a building.
What is
Wet Smoke?
Also, is "wet smoke";
produced by low smoldering heat. Wet smoke leaves a
strong odor and a sticky smeary mess. These can be
very difficult to clean.
"Dry smoke", on the other
hand, comes from fast burning fires at high
temperatures. Also, to be addressed is "protein based
fires" that produce a peculiar smoke of their own;
virtually invisible it discolors paint and varnishes
and also has a strong pungent odor. A common problem
also, is "fuel oil fire" and the soot it causes.
And of course there are other
common challenges such as fire extinguisher residue.
