Are
Floods in Colorado Springs Common?
It has been said that
flash floods are actually the most common natural
hazard in the Colorado Springs area.
This type of flooding is most
likely to occur in the months of May through September.
Floods
are a Danger to More than Just Your Property
Apparently the real danger
lies in that often thunderstorms can't be seen or
heard by the people downstream. Of course, runoff from
the mountains certainly can quickly cause water levels
of the small brooks and creeks to quickly rise to
flash flood levels.
This is fast moving water and
can reach heights of ten to twenty feet. It's important to be aware of
which streams and waterways are nearby when there is heavy rain.
Never attempt to cross a
flooding area. Interestingly, it only takes five to
seven inches of fast moving water to knock a person
off their feet. And ten inches of moving water can
actually move a car with only two feet causing a
vehicle to float. If you should find yourself in a
flash flood, be quick to seek higher ground.

Watch, Flood Warning
Colorado Springs from time
to time will indeed have a flash flood "watch",
different than a "warning", which basically means that
flash flooding is possible. It is wise to heed this
warning and make yourself prepared by first seeking
higher ground. It doesn't take long if you are
noticing rising water levels on the streets for danger
to become present.
Also, listen to your local
radio and television stations or Weather Service radio
for the latest alerts for flash flood warnings and
bulletins.
With a flash flood
"warning", it is not only possible, but most likely to
happen; a flash flood is coming. Immediately, evacuate
the endangered area. Resist the temptation to cross
moving water by foot or in vehicle.
Yes, natural flooding can
present a danger to more than your home or business, it can endanger your
life. Take heed. |
